Immerse yourself in Maori culture upon your arrival at the Mitai village. Enjoy a copious buffet-meal cooked using a traditional Maori method in an oven dug in the ground (according to the Hangi method). You will taste different meats and sauces, potatoes and sweet potatoes, fish soup, fresh artisanal bread and tropical fruits...
You will assist in a typical Maori performance: traditional song and dance (including the famous haka), a demonstration of arms, explanations on tattoo art by the chief of the village, story and legend telling, and the history of the Maori peoples relationship with European colonizers...
After the dinner and show, you will set off on a guided tour of the Mitai Forest, the only site where the glowworms of Rotorua live in their natural habitat. Their light and glow gives a particular atmosphere to the site. During this stroll, a Maori guide will explain how Maoris consider natural resources as an interface between men and gods and your guide will recount a number of myths. You will learn about the use of medicinal plants and local fauna. You will also see warriors in battle attire paddle a traditional canoe (the “Waka”) and descend the Wai-O-Whiro river.
