Day 1: From San Francisco to the south of Lake Tahoe
Depart from San Francisco in the early morning.
Cross Sacramento, the California state capital, and head to the Sierra Nevada.
Lunch in Placerville, a historic mining town.
Hike through a vast pine forest to get a view of Lake Tahoe.
Set up camp.
Dinner and evening around the campfire.
Day 2: Full day at Lake Tahoe
Breakfast.
Morning: kayaking on the lake and/or hiking in the mountains.
Afternoon: head to Heavenly Valley, a famous ski resort near South Lake Tahoe. Your choice of activity: shopping or a cable car ride up the mountain.
Dinner and evening in Stateline, a town known for its many casinos. Enjoy a champagne cruise on the lake if it takes your fancy!
Day 3: Lake Tahoe to San Francisco
Breakfast.
Drive to Emerald Bay State Park for some must-see views of the lake.
Your choice of activity: hike through the heart of the reserve or go kayaking on the lake.
Discover Vikingsholm, the famous 38-room Scandinavian mansion completed in 1928.
Return to San Francisco in the evening via the historic Pony Express route, which was once a path for delivering post quickly through the region, and the impressive El Dorado National Forest.
