Take part in an authentic tea ceremony in a rare traditional setting in Tokyo!
During this 2-hour tea ceremony, you'll have the opportunity to discover an important part of traditional Japanese culture in an authentic setting. The teahouse is located in the west of Tokyo and is a traditional-style building, with lots of wood and bamboo to create the calm atmosphere that these ceremonies require. This is an integral part of a tea ceremony.
Thanks to the explanations and demonstrations from a tea master, you'll learn all about the history of this ancestral ceremony and the different types of tea and utensils used.
You'll see the "temae", the specific technique for preparing matcha green tea, and learn how to make it yourself according to traditional practices. During this activity, you'll also learn about the differences between two types of matcha: "light" green tea (usucha) and "thick" green tea (koicha). This is a unique experience as koicha tea is usually only prepared during official and formal ceremonies.
After learning the art of tea preparation, you'll be able to taste it along with traditional sweet snacks while admiring the finesse of the matcha bowl and other ceremonial instruments.
At the end of this experience, you'll have learned about an age-old Japanese custom and had the opportunity to taste the most authentic matcha tea available in the Japanese capital.
